Canadian car rental company says it’s no longer offering its cars in Europe
Car rental company Carrefour has been unable to get cars in the United States for the first time in 20 years, citing a shortage of vehicles.
Carrefour’s decision comes as the company has been struggling to maintain a presence in Europe amid a wave of anti-immigration sentiment in the region.
In the United Kingdom, Carrefours sales in the first three months of the year fell 7.5% to $1.6 billion, according to the company’s website.
Last year, the company sold more than 4 million cars in China, where car rental rates are much higher, according the company.
The United States is home to more than 30 million vehicles registered to the U.S. auto industry, according an analysis by Bloomberg.
Carrefouring, which operates its own fleet of vehicles in Europe, was founded in Canada in 1976 and now has 2,200 U.K. staff.
On Tuesday, Carreftour said it was in talks with its European counterpart to offer its cars and services in the European Union.
