Posted September 08, 2018 09:07:59 The Portland Winterhawks will soon be playing in the Pacific Division for the first time in the franchise’s history, as they look to move into the Pacific Conference.
The Winterhawks opened their season in the West Division with a 7-3 victory over the Portland Winterhounds on Saturday.
The teams split the series, with the Winterhawks winning 6-3 on Friday in front of 4,000 fans at the Rose Quarter.
In addition to the Pacific division, the Winterhicks are playing in their second season in North America after making the playoffs last season in their inaugural season in Portland.
The Portland Winterbirds have a record of 3-1-0 in the Northwest Division, which includes the Pacific and Atlantic Divisions, but they have been inconsistent in their performances.
The team finished second in the league in scoring last season with a 2.03 goals per game average.
In 2016-17, the team recorded two wins and five ties.
The Winterhawks also made the playoffs in 2015-16, when they finished fourth in the conference.
Portland Winterhawks head coach Dave Eberle is hoping to get the team back to the postseason in 2017-18, as well.
The team has a goal differential of plus-7.8 this season.
The season opener on Saturday against the Portland Barons will mark the Winterhawk’s first regular-season game in the United States.
The Ice Dogs have not yet announced their season opener date.
